Chapter 21
Watching to make sure he wasnât followed, Justice headed straight back to the Silver Queen.
âGood evening, sir,â said the young man working the desk. âDid you have a pleasant dinner?â
âI did, thank you.â
âThatâs nice. What can I do for you, sir?â
âIâd like to rent another room.â
âA new room, sir? Is there something wrong?â
Thatâs what Iâm trying to figure out, Justice thought, but he just shook his head and smiled. âNope. Everythingâs fine and dandy.â
âAll right then. Thatâs good to hear. Will this room be for a friend?â
âNo. Itâs for me.â
The man blinked at him. âIâm afraid Iâll still have to charge you for your current roomâunless you want to wait till tomorrow to switch rooms?â
âNo. Iâll need the second room tonight. Now, in fact. And itâs okay. Iâll pay for both rooms.â
âOkay, sir. Thatâll be fine. I just wanted to let you know was all.â
âI appreciate that⦠um, whatâs your name?â
âJoseph, sir.â
âAll right, Joseph. Well, thank you. I appreciate you helping me. Are you working the overnight?â
âYes sir.â
âAll right.â
âDid you want the same sort of room, sir? A single orââ
âThat doesnât really matter to me, Joseph. Is the room across the hall from mine available?â
âAcross the hall, sir?â
âThatâs right.â
âLet me see. What room are you in again, sir?â
Justice told him.
âOkay, sir.â Joseph turned and studied the board. âYes, sir. Room 309 just happens to be available.â
âGood.â
âItâs a single, sir, like yours. Will that be okay?â
âThatâll be perfect, Joseph. Iâll take it. Better give it to me for the next couple of nights.â
âOkay, sir. I can do that. The cost per night for the new room will be two dollars, sir. So if you want two nights, thatâll be four dollars, please. Just for the new room, I mean.â
Justice laid a pair of twenty-dollar double eagles on the counter. âKeep the change.â
The young clerkâs eyes bulged as if the gold coins were rattlers. âSir?â
âLook, Joseph, I donât want you telling anybody about my room. Thatâs worth a little extra to me. And by anybody, I mean anybody. Not men, not women, not the other clerks, and not lawmen. Especially not lawmen.â
âI donât want to get in trouble, sir.â
âYou wonât get in trouble. Youâre not doing anything wrong, Joseph. And neither am I. All I want is some privacy. Now, thereâs a chance someone might come asking for me. If they do, I want you to tell the truth. I want you to give them my original room number. You agree to do that, and the money is yours. Can I count on you, Joseph?â
âYes sir,â Joseph said, and used both hands to retrieve the gold coins. He seemed to be shaking off his surprise. Suddenly, he smiled. âYou certainly can count on me.â
âThatâs good.â He held up another golden eagle. âIf you do that and Iâm still alive when I check out, this oneâs yours, too.â
âYes sir. Thank you, sir. You can count on me.â
Justice paid and got the new key.
He listened in the stairwell before climbing the stairs, then listened at the door before entering the hallway.
